Riverfront Park

Enjoy a leisurely stroll on the Belltown Trail on the north side of Riverfront Park. The 1/2 mile, eight-foot wide trail is a flat, asphalted, scenic loop that offers a treed park setting along the banks of the Marmaton River. The Belltown Trail is lit with LED lighting from dusk to dawn and is complete with benches for a rest. The park also features a large pavilion for picnickers and gatherings. On the south side, you’ll enjoy river Loop Road with a roundabout garden spot, an observation deck on the Marmaton River, as well as some amazing Fort Scott history murals on the Highway 69 overpass. RIVERFRONT PARK HISTORY: In 2005 the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Fort Scott established the Fort Scott Visioning Committee to explore opportunities to improve quality of life in Fort Scott. Public meetings were held where citizens, working in teams, were given the opportunity to suggest improvement ideas. From the dozens of ideas compiled, a team of citizens selected the top five ideas to be implemented. A pair of co-conveners were chosen for each of the five ideas. Each pair of co-conveners formed their team. The Developing the River as an Asset was one of those five teams. In April of 2006 the Developing the River as an Asset team had its first meeting. The team developed a conceptual plan for improvements to the area along the river just north of downtown Fort Scott. In January 2007 the team decided that the establishment of a riverfront authority would enhance public funding opportunities for the project. In February 2007 Senate Bill 321 was introduced into the Kansas Legislature to create the Fort Scott Bourbon County Riverfront Authority. The bill to create the Fort Scott Bourbon County Riverfront Authority was passed and was signed by Governor Sebelius on April 27, 2007.

The Liberty Theatre

The Liberty Theatre is the premier venue in Southeast Kansas, if not the entire state. The Theatre has hosted such talent as Mel Tillis, Kelly Hunt, Restless Heart, David Brenner, Shenandoah, Sammy Kershaw, and Kim WIlson, just to name a few. It is also home to wedding receptions, private and corporate events. The Liberty Theatre is located at 113 S. Main Street in beautiful downtown Fort Scott, Kansas.  The buildings that are now housed by the Liberty Theatre were originally built in 1883.  Prior to the Liberty, the building has played host to a variety of businesses including, a newspaper, an architect’s office, furniture store, millinery, barber shop and a doctor’s office.  The property was converted into a moving picture house by H.L. Stout. The theatre took approximately one year to construct because of the difficulty to obtain structural steel during and following World War I.  The Liberty Theatre was originally opened on July 1, 1919 as a single screen movie theater featuring two hand-painted murals depicting the Dragoons on the grounds of Fort Scott and the Western settlers in Downtown Fort Scott of the late 1800’s. Liberty Theatre was later renamed the Fox Theater and in the 1980’s split and converted into twin movie theaters.  Michael Flannelly purchased the Fox Theater and began renovations in early 2000’s. The historical ornamental murals were unveiled once again after being covered up during renovations by the Fox Theater owners. Jim and Paulette Smith, successful local business owners, purchased the property in 2005.  The couple finished the renovations started by Flannelly and opened the theatre for live concerts, corporate events and private parties in 2006. In 2015, local real estate broker and entrepreneur, Jared Leek, purchased the Liberty Theatre from the Smith’s and continues the legacy of the previous owners. Liberty Theatre hosts a variety of live performances open to the public, as well as, private and corporate events.  For additional information on upcoming events and planning your event, contact Jared Leek at (620) 224-9787. This beautiful, restored theatre that is host to some of the best touring acts in the nation. Also home of Crooner’s Lounge! Private & corporate events are also welcome! Check out more here!

He had his best season in 2012, winning a Gold Glove and hitting 33 home runs with 100 RBIs in leading Washington to its first National League East Division title. But he remembers his uncle David Regan, who coached him at Fort Scott High School, as “probably the best coach I’ve ever had.” The main field at the new complex will be named for Regan. “He was the best. He was a professional at it, and gained a lot of respect around town because of the way he treated people, regardless of their status,” LaRoche said. “He was constantly willing to go out of his way to make somebody a better person. I feel like he’s a huge reason why I’m playing in the big leagues now. He was kind of like a second father to me.” LaRoche believes the new stadium will benefit not just the high school team but the community as well. LaRoche thanked the numerous people who helped out. “I have to thank baseball for that, to be able to be in position to help out and do some things like this. You always hear that it feels better to give than it does receive and that’s very true, especially when some of the kids get to benefit — not only this year but for years to come to play here.”

Gordon Parks Museum

History Open Monday – Friday 8AM – 5PM Gordon Parks Museum’s mission is to honor the life and work of Gordon Parks, internationally-known photographer, filmmaker, writer, and musician; and to use his remarkable life story to teach about artistic creativity, cultural awareness, and the role of diversity in our lives. After Gordon Parks attended the first ever Gordon Parks Celebration in 2004, he gifted the Gordon Parks Center with 30 of his photographs. This spectacular group includes many of his iconic works such as American Gothic, Tuskegee Airmen, Flavio, Ali Sweating, Ingrid Bergman on Stromboli and many others. In 2006, after his death, his personal effects and other memorabilia, per Gordon’s wishes, were given to the Museum. This valuable collection included many of his awards and medals, personal photos, paintings and drawings of Gordon, plaques, certificates, diplomas and honorary doctorates, selected books and articles, clothing, record player, tennis racquet, magazine articles, his collection of Life magazines and much more. Since that time, more gifts have been given by his family and friends such as his camera, gifted by his daughter Toni Parks; his film camera and tripod, donated by his son David Parks; a collection of photographs of Gordon donated by Patricia DuBose Duncan, and much more. These gifts have made this collection substantive and significant and we are proud of Gordon’s faith in us to preserve and protect his legacy. The Gordon Parks Museum/Center is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the regular school year. It may also be opened on the weekend for special tours. Please call before you visit to make sure the Museum is open, as it is closed from time to time for meetings, travel, etc. at 620.223.2700 ext. 5850. The Gordon Parks Museum hosts a celebration each year for “The Learning Tree.” The museum also hosts a number of other annual events including Martin Luther King, Jr. Day activities, and the Gordon Parks Celebration. This years celebration will be held October 6th-8th, honoring Adger Cowans and William Rhoden.
