Unveiling “Free to Serve” Mural

Skubitz Plaza - October 6, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

The 1st Kansas Colored Infantry was mustered into service in June 1862, on the Fort Scott Parade Grounds. These men were the very first black men in the Union Army, fighting for their freedom and the freedom of all African Americans. This mural featuring the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry is in honor and tribute of their sacrifice and willingness to serve.
